CPR and First Aid Classes
Brentley Metcalf is now offering CPR and First Aid classes to all MRP members and their families and co-workers. These classes will be sanctioned by the American Heart Association and are available immediately. CPR is a valuable skill to have while on the river and you need to be prepared when/if an emergency arises. Would you know what to do if a friend or family member suddenly needed your help? Roll Classes at the Kernersville YMCA Tuesday sessions, 6:30-8:30pm, February 10 through March 3 or Thursday sessions, 6:30-8:30pm, February 10 through March 5 at the Kernersville YMCA. Classes will be taught by two certified instructions with limited class sizes for personalized instruction. Cost is $75 for 1 session (4 classes). USNWC presents: Kayak Roll Clinics - Equipment Provided
Wednesdays 7-9pm and Fridays 6-8pm, January 7 through February 27 at the YWCA Central Carolinas, 3420 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28209. Learn the fundamentals of kayaking in a heated indoor pool. Beginners welcome; must be at least 7 years old. Learn rodeo skills for more advanced paddlers. Bring a swimsuit, the Whitewater Center will provide the rest.
Cost: $20 per person (YWCA members), $25 per person (non-members), Discount for registering for 4 or more classes!

10th Annual Tame Tyger the River Race, Recreational Float, and Festival, April 18th, 2009
The Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation Commission’s 10th Annual Tame the Tyger River Race, Recreational Float, and Festival has been set for April 18th, 2009. Race divisions will include: 10’ under kayak, 10’ over kayak, single canoe, double canoe, and women’s open division. Following the race and recreational float will be a festival with food, live music, an awards ceremony for the winners, and other activities. Approximately 75 paddlers participated in last year’s event and we hope to increase that number to over 100 for our 10th anniversary. Please note: Equipment is not provided for these sessions. If you're just starting out in the sport and do not yet have your own equipment please post a message on our board asking other members to bring extra equipment if possible.

MAC Roll Sessions, Thursday Nights 8:00 - 9:30pm
Roll sessions are held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center, Thursday nights from 8:00pm* to 9:30pm. Admission to the pool is $5, rolling advice is free! The Mac is located in the Uptown area at 800 E 2nd St, Charlotte, NC 28202.
*Pool staff will do their best to open lanes for kayaker's use at 7:00pm, however, priority will be given to swimmers with season passes. Contact the front desk of the pool to confirm an early start time. (704) 336-DIVE

Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics Roll Sessions, Tuesdays 7:30 - 9:00pm
HFFA has graciously agreed to allow roll sessions in the 25yd heated pool. You do not need to be an HFFA member to attend. The cost is $5.00 for non-members, payable at the Guest Services desk in the pool lobby. To unload gear, follow the driveway next to the volleyball courts and park behind the building near the first set of double doors. Management requests that equipment is clean and everyone is out of the pool by 9:30pm.

Siskey YMCA (Matthews) Roll Sessions, 1st and 3rd Saturdays 6:00 - 8:00pm.
The Siskey YMCA has also graciously agreed to allow roll sessions in the indoor pool. Sessions will be the first and third Saturday of the month. The cost is $6.00 for members and $10 for non-members, payable at the pool. The entire pool will be available so longboats are welcome too. To unload gear, follow the driveway to the big glass wall. The glass doors should open at 6pm. Management requests that equipment is clean and everyone is out of the pool by 8:00 pm. Siskey YMCA is located at 3127 Weddington Road Matthews. 704-716-4200.

Latta Plantation Sessions - Outdoor, park closes at sunset
Admission is free! Latta Plantation Park is open year round although attendance tends to be seasonal. If you need help with your roll be sure to post to see if others are going. The park entrance is located at 6211 Sample Rd, Huntersville, North Carolina 28078. People meet at the Southern canoe launch (not the old boat rental location). Click here for a PDF map of the park.

Kayak Polo
Anyone, male or female, 14 years old and up can play. All players must sign a release, participants under 18 years of age must have a parent's signature. All equipment is provided, including the boat. There is a small one time insurance fee, contact Rick Garcia, 704-588-8221 for more details. Send us an email and let us know. Events posted in this box should be of broad interest to the MRP community and announced at least a week in advance. Attach pictures if you would like to see them included in the post. If possible, please write the complete text of your announcement in the email including date, time, location, and links for additional information. Announcements that can be simply copied and pasted from an email will be posted much more quickly than those we have to write ourselves.
